The Hyter Portrait Group Show
“The Hyter Portrait Group”, was founded in 1995 when New York portrait artist Daniel Greene held a workshop at Lourdes College in Sylvania, Ohio. At its conclusion, a small number of artists agreed to continue to meet on a weekly basis to paint portraits from life. Toledo Artist, Al Hyter, with over 50 years of portrait painting experience, organizing art clubs, and teaching, took the leadership role in “The Portrait Painters’ Workshop”. In 2004, Al Hyter retired, and in honor of him, the group officially became “The Hyter Group”, which is now headed up by another fine portrait artist, Bruce Watrol. The group meets weekly every Saturday morning at Common Space II in Toledo. They have grown in size over the years from just a handful off members to 25 or so. It is an informal organization in which anyone who shows up to paint donates $5.00 for the 2 hour session. This money is used to pay the models. They now have 2 model stands with models every week for 4 weeks. Some finish their work in one session, while others use the total of 8 hours to finish their work. This is a very dedicated group of artists varying in age from 20-80 years old. Many of them rarely miss a session and the chance to paint from life. For more information on the group, contact Bruce Watrol, 1045 Keeler, Maumee, Ohio, 42537…419-893-8260.
